Ten selfies are worth a million bucks (of publicity money). You and I can’t do that. We don’t have the face that can launch a million conversations. Stars like Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr, Anna Kendrick and Emma Watson however, DO. While we quiver and squeal in gratitude when our favourite personalities deign to share with us pictures, quotes and day-today activities on twitter and Instagram- our social media deserts have their own agenda. Welcome to the world of the carefully curated social media ‘rich and famous person’.
These artists are showing us what we should think of them, out of the following- funny, smart, witty, awesome and cool. They pose for Instagram pictures with their famous friends (See: Gwyneth Paltrow, Taylor Swift), post funny, self-deprecating tweets (Mindy Kaling) or retweet self-congratulatory messages (all of them). And when the time comes, they aggressively promote their movies, shows, music etc. Social media is a platform where you reach out to the masses, create your brand and stay relevant. The official page of a movie has less fans and followers than an actor’s page. While Channing Tatum’s twitter page has 7 million followers, the official page for Magic Mike has just over 10000. Then it makes absolute sense that Channing Tatum would be the one to release the movie’s first poster on his personal twitter account. This way the studio doesn’t even have to spend so much on press releases. The multitude of entertainment and gossip blogs are ready to lap it up.
So let’s address the various ways movies are being promoted by their famous stars. It’s a really smart trend. We, the audience, get something to talk about and then we go watch their movies.

Robert Downey Jr. does this best. His twitter profile says: You Know Who I am. And so, with no frills attached, his twitter account is used exclusively for plugging in his movies. Currently promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron, his posts mainly of consist of interviews from press tours, movie posters, Iron Man posters, raising money for a children’s NGO (You get a chance to attend the premiere) etc. Inadvertently, he has become the big brother mascot of the entire Avengers team, carrying majority weight of the film’s promotion.

What happens when a cult movie swarming in sequel rumors for years, and then suddenly, after fourteen years, the rumors come true? No one at Valentino 2015 show could ever have imagined that they would be treated to ramp walk by Derek (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) of Zoolander. And when these two stars strutted down the runway in their designer outfits, hilariously aping the model walk with straight faces, that’s about the time the internet went wild. Simultaneously Paramount realized a statement on twitter announcing the Zoolander 2. If that wasn’t enough, photos of their backstage shenanigans sent us into a tizzy. When everyone laughs, everyone wins.

For the movie adaptation of the book, Paper towns, John Green has been treating his fans to a steady stream of funny GIFS on Tumblr, movie related announcements on twitter and an interview by MTV using twitter’s latest live-video streaming app Periscope.
