According to a HBR report, 72% of corporate ranked employee engagement as very important to achieving organisational success. Engagement means ensuring commitment and motivation of employees towards your organisation, and at the same time developing as individuals. It is certainly a qualitative measure for the success of an organisation, and hard to measure. Moreover, it can be challenging to achieve this for every employee. Employee engagement is an investment of time and resources and is tied to the health of an organisation
Here are some ways to increase employee engagement in your organisation:
Give an introduction, share the news
It is important that employees are aware about the different activities of their organisation. Just because an employee is working in a particular department doesn’t mean that he/she doesn’t know about what is happening elsewhere in the company. Keeping your employees updated about the various events, progress and activities in your organisation is an important and relatively simple step towards engagement. This also empowers employees to better communicate the goals of your organisation to outsiders. Engagement on social media also helps. Add your employees to your social network and post their messages on your channel. Follow them and make them follow you.
Trust your employees to do their job. Give them an opportunity to do things their way and make them responsible for their work. This can be done by giving everyone an opportunity to lead and also by allowing employees from different verticals to communicate with each other while working on a task instead of communicating through a single individual. This also allows your employees to grow and develop within the company.
Rewards and Incentives
Every employee wants to feel secure in their job and be assured of a future. While this is generally a long-term concern, regular incentives and perks give employees a cause to work harder and better. Corporate reward programs are becoming a business in itself. It may cost you some to provide these at your company, but they will make your employees happy and loyal to your organisation.
Check up on your employees and ask them what they are up to. In other words, give them attention. Acknowledge the progress of your employees and sometimes a simple ‘Thank You’ and ‘Good Job’ can go a long way in motivating your employees. When employees are not recognized, they don’t feel the need to put in effort.
Give your employees feedback on their performance. But firstly, take the time to personally go through what they have done. Ask them to list out all the tasks performed by them during a time period and then check on it. This way you can identify the strengths and weaknesses of your employees and give them constructive feedback on where they can improve and where they are getting it right. This helps them to grow individually and ultimately be of greater value to the organisation.
Give them different tasks
A good change up, keeps the employees going. It prevents the job from becoming too mundane and mechanical. This might be hard if they are working in a particularly technical field, but if they are qualified to perform other tasks, give them an opportunity to so. How do you do this? Just ask them what they want to do and give them a trial run.
Give everyone a voice
Good ideas come at the most unexpected of times and from the most unexpected people. So create an environment where people feel free to contribute ideas and suggestions. This sows the seed for innovation and invention. If people don’t necessarily want to speak up in public, shoot mails asking for inputs and insights.
Promote organisational values
Anything that makes you proud of your company, share it. Ethical practices, good performances, achievements, milestones etc. Not only does it create a positive work environment, but it also begets loyalty and a sense of pride among employees.
